Session Abstract
An important aspect of reducing the stress state of the railroad deals with controlling the longitudinal rail stresses to safe levels. Hence the efficient management of stress induced thermal forces in continuous welded rail (CWR) becomes an important aspect of railroad maintenance practices. CWR track is prone to lateral buckling when the rails are under high compressive forces, and when high tensile forces dominate, rail defect growth can cause rail fractures, weld failures and rail joints to pull apart. The magnitude of induced thermal forces is governed by the rail neutral temperature (RNT). The RNT is the temperature at which the net longitudinal rail force is zero. Current railroad procedures require that CWR be installed and maintained at an optimum RNT range to minimize damaging force levels. However, research has shown that RNT can change over time due to temperature changes, train or maintenance disturbances, and difficulties with certain rail maintenance practices such as destressing and broken/defective rail repair. Because of the RNT’s variability and its accurate and nondestructive measurement difficulty, railroads rely on best practice guidelines and procedures to manage RNT.

This panel with both US and international experience will present and discuss practices and recent advances in the management of CWR as it relates to longitudinal stress and rail neutral temperature. US representation will include the UP, BNSF and Kandrew Inc. Consulting Services, while international representation is comprised of Japan, UK and Australia. The session will be moderated by Mr. Ryan McWilliams, Vice President, Technology and Business Development, Salient Systems, Inc.
