Abstract:

The paper presents the technology of mobile rail milling as a method of rail head management for defects. It will give a background to its development from the mid-1990’s and the progress of the technology to date and the availability of production machines that are being used in Europe and Asia.

It will describe the engineering of rail milling and the machines that have been developed to apply it. The paper will describe look at the operational and environmental benefits of the machine and look at how it is positioned in the asset managers tool box relative to rail grinding, which it is closely compared with, and the next step which is re-railing. The paper will look at least 3 case examples of where and how the machine has been applied.
