The Role of Elasticity in Ballasted Tracks

The track is a linear asset; many different conditions influence the track stiffness. The change from timber sleepers to concrete sleepers results in an increased loading of the ballast and the subsoil. To compensate the differences of the stiffness situations, which are degrading the track quality, the elasticity of the track system is important to minimize the degradation. This presentation presents a review of the fundamentals of the load transfer to the subgrade, reports the strategies to spread the loading and demonstrates long-term measurements of track sections as well for HH tracks.
