Wheel and rail steel types are reviewed, including the fundamentals of iron-carbon phase transitions and wheel/rail steel production. Mechanisms for key damage modes (e.g. wear and rolling contact fatigue) are reviewed and connected with practical observations. A variety of wear and defect types observed in field conditions are summarized, including their main modes of initiation and propagation, as well as strategies for mitigation and maintenance.
